Job Summary

Install, modify, inspect, and test all water-based fire suppression systems, piping, valves, pumps, and sprinkler devices. Fabricate and repair associated piping while interpreting mechanical plans and updating drawings. Perform installation, maintenance, and inspection in strict accordance with NFPA, Life Safety Code, and Authority Having Jurisdiction standards. Assist in testing fire alarms, extinguishers, fire escapes, and hydrants. Provide responsive customer support and advise on fire suppression solutions. Work independently or as part of a multi-trade team under Area Supervisor guidance. Comply with all safety codes, wear required safety equipment and uniform, and operate in research laboratories and around hazardous materials. Accept reasonable overtime and provide on-site support during emergency situations.

Required Qualifications

  • Five years' related experience in the installation, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of all types of water-based fire suppression systems
  • Must possess a current State Journeyman or higher Sprinkler license
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to stoop and bend repeatedly and work on hands and knees and other awkward positions for extended periods
  • Must be able to lift up to a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to push, pull and transport piping and equipment in excess of 200 lbs.
  • Must be able to walk to and from various buildings or work sites carrying tools, equipment and other essentials
  • Must be able to work alone, in confined spaces and extreme temperatures, climb multiple sets of stairs, work off ladders, staging, lifts or other elevated platforms
  • Must observe and comply with all standard safety codes and practices and perform work in accordance with recognized trade and University standards
  • Required to wear a clean, neat uniform and maintain a professional image at all times
  • Required to wear safety equipment and clothing when appropriate and/or required
  • Willing to work in research laboratory environments and around hazardous materials
  • Willing to accept a reasonable amount of overtime in support of group business needs
  • Required to supply a complete set of hand tools
  • Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with peers and customers
  • Must be able to read and interpret detailed plans, drawings, specifications, operating manuals and other written materials associated with this trade
  • Must possess a current State Journeyman or higher Sprinkler license
  • Must possess a valid driver's license

Desired Qualifications

  • State Contractor License preferred
  • Experience and proficiency in the use of industry-recognized diagnostic testing equipment
  • Able to perform mathematical calculations required to accurately size and install system components and devices
  • Familiarity with equipment diagnostics, bar-coding, and related technologies desired
