Job Summary
Create storytelling that accurately informs, entertains, and engages audiences through metrics, focusing on high school sports, breaking news, and features in south central Colorado. Hunt down diverse stories including updates on teams and athletes, while providing thoughtful analysis of complex issues. Connect with the community via social media, on-camera work, forums, and outreach to build the Pueblo Chieftain's leading voice in local athletics. Collaborate with editors to evaluate content performance and develop ongoing plans, capturing photos and videos as needed. Promote personal and institutional brands while delivering great customer service to help readers find answers. Work some nights and weekends within a guild structure, utilizing AI tools and mobile editing skills to enhance journalism.
Required Qualifications
- A valid driver's license
- Reliable transportation
- Minimum liability insurance required by state law
- Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism or related field
- Previous reporting experience
- Proficiency on social media platforms; including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Reddit
- AI and automation literacy and a willingness or experience in using it to enhance their journalism
- Experience shooting and editing photos and video on a mobile device
- Strong communication skills
- News judgement
- Headline-writing ability
- Ability to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure
- Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently
- Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills
- Familiarity with AP style
- Ability to work some nights and weekends
- Comfort building a beat and communicating with athletes and coaches
- Applicants must be authorized to work in the applicable location
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism or related field preferred
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
- Previous reporting experience preferred
- Experience covering sports
- AI and automation literacy and a willingness or experience in using it to enhance their journalism
