Job Summary

Organize and provide speech-language services to facilitate rehabilitation, directing patient participation in tasks to restore communication and swallowing functions. Screen, examine, and evaluate patients to establish diagnoses, develop treatment goals, and implement plans covering cognitive-communication, oral motor skills, and dysphagia. Adapt care based on individual needs, consult with the rehabilitation team, and coordinate adaptive communication devices. Supervise temporary licensees and students where applicable, ensure timely documentation, and maintain a safe environment. Perform routine reexaminations to modify treatment plans as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology, Communication Disorders, Communicative Disorders or similarly titled area that is consistent and acceptable to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
  • Must be able to travel nationwide for 13 week assignments
  • Must be able to work in various settings
  • Must be able to supervise CFYs temporary licensees, students and support personnel in accordance with state licensure requirements and professional standards
  • Must be able to adhere to an established plan of care, department and patient(s)' schedule, and timely documentation of services
  • Must be able to attend and contribute to patient care, staffing conferences and other related meetings
  • Must be able to make referrals to other disciplines, agencies in order to address the comprehensive needs of the patient
  • Must be able to consult with other members of the rehabilitation team to select the most appropriate therapeutic regimen consistent with the needs and capabilities of each patient
  • Must be able to adapt program and/or plan of care according to the needs of the individual patient
  • Must be able to promote a safe environment and enforce the elimination of fire and safety hazards
  • Must be able to order supplies and equipment as necessary
  • Must be able to clean, maintain, identify, and report the need for repair of equipment, as necessary
  • Must be able to screen, examine and evaluate patients, including history, systems review, and application of appropriate tests and measures
  • Must be able to synthesize information and interpret examination findings in order to establish a diagnosis, identify impairments, determine the predicted level of improvement and the time required to achieve it
  • Must be able to identify precautions/contraindications and design and plan of care
  • Must be able to develop appropriate treatment goals and methods in collaboration with the patient and caregivers
  • Must be able to implement the speech language pathology treatment plan
  • Must be able to complete all related documentation and record keeping regarding these services
  • Must be able to apply therapeutic techniques in areas such as: cognitive-communication, speech intelligibility, oral motor skills, swallowing disorders/dysphagia, perceptual abilities, orientation, memory, pragmatics, psychosocial expression, functional communication
  • Must be able to perform Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) if trained in flexible/nasal endoscopy
  • Must be able to coordinate the acquisition of adaptive communication devices and instruct patients in their use
  • Must be able to facilitate identification of hearing deficits and appropriately refer for assessment, diagnosis rehabilitation and/or personal amplification
  • Must be able to select appropriate activities suited to the individual's physical and mental capacity, intelligence level and interest
  • Must be able to instruct patients in the skills and techniques required for participation in therapeutic activities
  • Must be able to evaluate patient progress, attitudes and behavior as related to rehabilitative potential
  • Must be able to perform routine reexamination as needed/required to modify/progress plan of treatment
