Job Summary

Adapt classroom activities and materials under teacher direction to reinforce learning objectives while monitoring students in classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and during field trips. Implement individualized behavioral plans and instructional programs covering reading, math, and daily living skills to support student independence. Model appropriate social interactions, conversation, and clean-up activities to demonstrate culturally sensitive behaviors. Document student progress, completed assignments, and on-task time for daily logs and IEP evaluations. Maintain classroom equipment and work areas to ensure a safe learning environment, responding promptly to emergency situations involving injured students or conflicts. Assist with transportation logistics, including loading and unloading wheelchair-bound students on buses, and provide direct supervision during lunch, recess, and assemblies.

Required Qualifications

  • at least two years of study (60 semester hours) at an accredited institution of higher education
  • an associate's degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education
  • a qualifying score on a state-approved assessment that measures the individual's knowledge of and ability to assist in instruction at the appropriate level
  • thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the District as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Special Education Classroom Assistant
  • knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and Florence 1 Schools
  • knowledge of the characteristics of the age group assigned
  • ability to work with emotionally, physically and/or mentally impaired students
  • ability to maintain confidentiality
  • ability to maintain composure under stressful situations
  • ability to communicate with diverse groups
  • ability to adapt to changing work priorities
  • ability to work as part of a team
  • ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions

  • ability to read and interpret lesson plans, instructions, student records and other materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job
  • comprehensive knowledge of the terminology and various professional languages used within the department
