Job Summary
Specialist, Florida Conservation provides mission support and coordinates with state and local government partners on Florida marine-conservation priorities. Key duties include engaging with officials on issues like water quality, marine debris, sea level rise and climate change; supporting flagship projects (marine plastics assessments, grassroots advocacy, habitat protection); representing Ocean Conservancy in public settings and testimony; and helping shape policy positions. The role involves networking across government, NGO peers, and stakeholders, with responsibilities that span outreach, policy analysis, and education efforts. The successful candidate will have 1–5 years of Florida environmental conservation experience (advanced degree considered in lieu of experience), strong communications and public-speaking skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a hybrid Florida-based environment.
Required Qualifications
- One to five years of experience in environmental conservation in Florida
- an advanced degree (in science, law, policy, or a field related to conservation) will be considered in lieu of experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to Ocean Conservancy’s marine conservation mission
- Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal; facility with public speaking; experience and comfort with speaking to the media a plus
- Experience and familiarity with environmental policy analysis and advocacy and a desire to develop policy positions that will have a positive impact for Florida’s marine environment
- Highly detail oriented, adaptable, well-organized, and self-starting – ability to work independently and manage up
- Highly collaborative and outgoing with large, multi-disciplinary teams
- Passion for conservation of Florida’s marine environment
