Job Summary
Special Educational Assistant - Autistic Support provides individualized and small-group instructional support to students with autism within the special education program. Responsibilities include assisting in math, reading, and other curricula; supporting daily living activities; following instructions from classroom staff and therapists; implementing behavioral management and therapeutic activity plans; supervising field trips and serving as van driver when needed; operating assistive devices and communications technology; documenting data and logs; maintaining CPR/First Aid/UKERU training and completing 20 hours of annual professional development; and collaborating with teachers, therapists, and administrators to support student learning. Professional requirements include a minimum of 2 years post-secondary/associate degree or passing the paraprofessional assessment (I.U.5) and ongoing certification in CPR, First Aid, and UKERU. This role reports to Building Principal and Special Education Teacher and is aligned with the General Teamsters Local Union No. 397 collective bargaining agreement.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum two (2) years post-secondary (48 credits) or associate degree or passing score on Special Education Paraprofessional Assessment test (I.U.5)
- Willingness to follow instructions of principal, teacher, nurse, and therapists
- Ability to assist students with daily living activities (toileting, feeding, dressing)
- Computer knowledge or willingness to work with new technology
- Must be certified (or able to be certified) and maintain CPR, First Aid and UKERU certification; maintain 20 hours annual professional development
- Must maintain status as highly qualified by completing 20 hours of annual approved training
- Experience assisting in math, reading, and other curricula; supporting students in small groups or one-on-one
- Ability to supervise field trips and act as van driver when needed
- Adherence to district policies and ability to collaborate with teachers and therapists
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist with student safety during emergencies
