Job Summary
Special Education teachers modify, differentiate, and teach an inclusive curriculum; collaborate with families and Special Education teams to develop 504 plans and IEPs; provide academic, emotional, and physical support while fostering a safe, inclusive learning environment. Responsibilities include analyzing student work and assessments to ensure IEP compliance, gathering growth data and writing goals for annual IEP meetings, delivering pull-out/push-in/small group/1:1 instruction to differentiate instruction for diverse learners, building positive relationships with students and families, participating in weekly school-wide meetings, and engaging in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching to promote student achievement. Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree, NY certification eligibility, enrollment in a teacher-preparation program with maintaining a 2.5 GPA if the degree is not in education, and the goal of certification in NY within a reasonable period. The role emphasizes collaboration with internal and external partners and a commitment to social-emotional and academic development in urban K-12 settings.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- Certification is not required to be hired at Uncommon, but you need NY state certification eligibility
- Enroll in a teacher preparation program and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher during employment if you do not have a degree in education
- Must become certified in New York within a reasonable period after beginning employment
- 1-2 years experience preferred in involvement with urban K-12 settings
- Academic expertise in Special Education, the Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, or related fields
