Job Summary
Provide students with disabilities appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them achieve educational progress related to their intellectual, communication, emotional, social, physical, and self-help skills. Develop modified curricula and other instructional materials to address each student’s ability level. This instructional setting offers specially designed instruction for children with autism and/or other communication disorders who require support to build functional language/communication and functional behavior skills, with primary emphasis on language/communication and behavioral needs starting at the preschool level and increasing academic support later. Classes use highly structured environments with positive behavior supports aligned to Applied Behavior Analysis. Students participate with non-disabled peers with appropriate support to generalize skills. Collaboration with parents and staff to develop IEPs through ARD/IEP processes; plan and implement lessons reflecting accommodations for diverse learning styles; utilize technology and assistive tech to enhance learning; supervise teaching assistants/volunteers; conduct ongoing assessments; maintain professional communications; participate in professional development; and adhere to District/TEA policies. A $4,000 stipend is available for certified full-time SPED teachers.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Valid Texas teaching certificate in Special Education
- Knowledge of academic subject assigned
- Demonstrated proficiency in creation, implementation and progress monitoring of specially designed instruction
- Ability to individualize instruction to prepare students for participation in Least Restrictive Environments (LRE) to the maximum extent possible
- Must be physically capable of implementing student restraint as a last resort for safety
- Knowledge of ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting process and implementation
- Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs
- Effective communication skills
- Experience with collaboration with parents and staff to develop IEPs through ARD/IEP process
- Use of technology to strengthen teaching/learning process
- Plan and supervise assignments for teaching assistants and volunteers
- Maintain emotional control under stress
- Compliance with federal, state, District and school regulations and policies related to the delivery of special education services
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees
- Professional development and ongoing improvement of job-related skills
