Job Summary
Provide academic support and individualized therapy in communication, behavior, social, and daily living skills to diverse students or small groups based on individualized IEP goals. Assist in developing positive behavior, implementing protocols, and collecting detailed behavior and skill acquisition data for trend analysis and curriculum modification. Participate in Applied Behavior Analysis training, use adaptive equipment, and support toilet training and other daily living activities while maintaining constant alertness for student safety. Recognize signs of frustration to implement antecedent strategies and apply Nonviolent Crisis Intervention techniques as needed. Communicate clearly, make independent decisions within established policies, and maintain cooperative working relationships while complying with district rules and completing required trainings.
Required Qualifications
- AA degree, two years of full-time college or a passing grade on the paraprofessional exam
- Ability to organize and communicate effectively
- Ability to follow directions and learn new procedures
- Ability to provide care for student's physical needs
- Ability to project a friendly and supportive attitude
- Ability to obtain a CPR and First Aid training certification
- Complete district required trainings (e.g. de-escalation, understanding IEPs and safety trainings)
- Ability to learn and follow delegable medical procedures
- Proven work ethic
- Successful completion of Oregon School based fingerprinting and criminal history verification as deemed by State of Oregon legislation
- Must be 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds
- Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus
- Ability to talk or hear
- Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls
- Ability to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Ability to remain constantly alert, attentive, and ready to respond to students' needs and any behavioral crisis
- Ability to recognize signs of frustration, anxiety, and anger in order to implement antecedent strategies and teach alternative behaviors which may prevent problem behavior
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, best practices in working with students with diverse needs
- Effective communication with students and adults
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times
- Critical thinking and problem-solving
- Flexible to learn new equipment and systems
- Pre-employment Drug Screen clearance
- Background Investigation clearance
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of special education is preferred
