Job Summary

Implement instructional plans and programs for assigned students under the direction of special education teachers, adapting classroom materials to meet individual needs. Assist with preparation and management of instructional resources while supervising students during individual, small group, or whole class instruction. Provide direct support for daily tasks, technology use, and behavior management data collection. Supervise students in and out of the building, including field trips and safety drills, while attending student team meetings. Direct all student communication to the special educator and maintain strict confidentiality. Maintain physical assistance capabilities and patience when working with children.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of a high school diploma
  • One year of directly related experience
  • Good working knowledge of children
  • Good understanding of standard classroom operations and teaching methods
  • Strong reading, writing, and math skills
  • Demonstrated basic understanding of the subject matter being taught to students
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write and correspond
  • Ability to speak effectively
  • Good basic computer skills
  • Experience with word processing programs
  • Proficiency with Google Mail or similar email
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently, and effectively with various individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, parents, and representatives of outside organizations
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with peers, subordinates, supervisors, parents, and outside agencies
  • Ability to effectively resolve conflicts and handle stress
  • A willingness to attend required or requested training, meetings, and professional growth activities outside of school hours (e.g., summers, teacher in-service days, and after-school)
  • Ability to remain calm and follow protocols in responding to emergencies
