Job Summary
Provide research-based social skills instruction and intervention under supervision of a certified teacher. Support Special Education students with learning, behavior, physical, and/or cognitive disabilities including Autism, delivering academic assistance, behavior interventions, and instruction of social and daily living skills. Must be willing to attend required trainings and to accept feedback from specialists to adjust instructional techniques. Responsible for supervising and assisting students in various settings (classroom, cafeteria, bus, field trips), accompanying students to and from the bus, and supporting MTSS for behavior and academics. Requires teamwork, strong interpersonal skills, ability to adapt to flexible daily assignments, and compliance with district and administration directives. May require physical activities, crisis intervention, data collection, and completion of paperwork; may involve assisting with hygiene needs and transportation logistics. Performs duties under the direction of a special education teacher or principal and collaborates with staff to ensure FAPE delivery and student progress.
Required Qualifications
- Must be willing to attend any additional required evening trainings or meetings during the school year or during the summer
- Must be willing to accept feedback from specialists and special education facilitator regarding implementation and use feedback to implement changes in instruction
- MUST be willing and able to work with students who are explosive in nature and engage in physical and verbal aggression towards others
- Must be able to interact appropriately with all students
- Must be a team player to assist in all aspects needed within the classroom, cafeteria, hallway
- Must be able to follow directives of certified staff
- All Para Educators receiving the Special Education differential pay will be required to sign the vacancy notice acknowledging willingness to perform duties
- Must pass Medicaid Fraud background check prior to hire, bidding, and/or transferring to a special education position
- Ability to physically restrain students if trained to do so and as needed per directives
- Ability to remain calm and respectful when students are in crisis
- Demonstrated ability to follow directives of certified staff
- Demonstrated ability to work with culturally diverse students
- Ability to collaborate with team planning
- Must maintain confidentiality
- Ability to climb stairs and walk long distances
- Ability to participate in and direct extensive physical activities
- Ability to supervise students in various settings (classroom, lunch, bus, field trips)
- Must be able to complete necessary paperwork accurately and timely
- Must accept direction from special education teachers
- Ability to model positive attitude and teamwork
