Special Education / Building Paraeducator

Job Summary
Assist Special Education students with personal hygiene, toileting, health, and community living while promoting positive self-esteem and academic growth. Communicate appropriately with students, parents, and staff, and maintain confidentiality regarding student information as required by FERPA. Provide physical strength to support students, participate in field trips and home visits, and assist in carrying out educational plans prescribed by IEPs. Respond flexibly to changes in assignments during emergency situations and attend summer or after-school in-service services. Work 6.75 hours daily from 7:10 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. for 191 days at Port Huron High School.
Required Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent (GED)
- Associate's Degree or 60 semester hours at an institution of higher education
- Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through passage of a formal state or local academic assessment approved by the State Board of Education: Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Paraeducator Readiness Exam (MTTC) or the original Basic Skills Test (MTTC)
- A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Exam
- ETS Parapro Assessment – A passing score of 460 is required
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) Trained or willing to be trained
- Must be able to bend, twist, stoop, squat and lift up to 50 pounds in assisting students, if needed
