Job Summary
Special Education Assistant reports to Building Principal/Special Education Supervisor. The role is a full-time position working 6.5 hours per day from Monday through Friday. It involves supporting students with disabilities, implementing behavior management techniques, supervising students, and performing clerical tasks. Requires a High School Diploma or GED, plus 48 semester hours or passing the PRAXIS PARAPRO exam, and ability to obtain an Educational Aide Permit with the Ohio Department of Education. Must be able to lift/ restrain or assist students as needed, communicate ideas clearly, and maintain punctual attendance. Prior experience with students with disabilities and computer familiarity are preferred.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum of 48 semester hours of secondary education or PRAXIS PARAPRO exam
- One or two years related experience with students with disabilities preferred
- Pass written test or meet educational requirements of No Child Left Behind Act
- Ability to apply for Educational Aide Permit with Ohio Department of Education
- Ability to work with students including those with aggressive/abusive behavior
- Ability to communicate clearly
- Organizational and problem solving skills
- Flexibility and adaptability
- Ability to supervise students
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques in school discipline
- Physical ability to lift/ restrain/ pursue handicapped students
- Clerical skills; familiarity with office machines
- Experience with computers preferred
- Good attendance and punctuality
