Job Summary
Develop and maintain a pleasant, orderly classroom environment while assisting students in completing learning tasks and following routines. Lead or facilitate instruction in 1:1, small group, or whole-class settings, carrying out instructional plans and monitoring student behavior to support IEP goals. Provide direct support by modeling evidence-based interventions, coordinating with specialists to develop behavior and crisis plans, and facilitating accommodations. Assist with daily living skills, supervise students during lunch and free time, and maintain records including behavior logs, incident reports, and training data. Procure and operate audio-visual equipment, coordinate school and home supports, and provide transition plans for students moving between settings. Work under the direction of the classroom teacher to ensure students remain in school and stabilize their progress.
Required Qualifications
- High school graduate or hold equivalence of a high school diploma
- Willingness to seek and maintain CPR certification
- Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled/handicapped students
- Willingness to learn specialized instructional/management techniques employed with disabled/handicapped students
- Ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff
- Basic keyboard and filing training
- Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions
- Ability to lift up to 80 pounds
- Ability to lift equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to assist/restrain students and operate specialized equipment or office equipment

- Ability to perform medical-related duties including catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, assistive breathing devices, colostomy, and ileostomy needs
- Ability to assist with carry-over of related services including Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech, Adapted Physical Education, and Vision
- Ability to perform duties after normal assigned hours
- Ability to travel with students on field trips
- Ability to move students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices
- Ability to perform personal hygiene of disabled students including changing catheters, diapers, and clothing
- Ability to maintain a notebook containing weekly behavior logs, behavior intervention plans, social skills lesson plans, incident reports, and communication logs
- Ability to monitor student attendance, behavior, and suspension data
- Ability to assist students with daily living skills including toileting, feeding, and positioning
- Ability to supervise and train students in the lunchroom and during free time
- Ability to provide direct support to staff and students by teaching and modeling research/evidence-based interventions
- Ability to coordinate with Specialists and school staff to implement behavior curriculum and develop effective intervention plans
- Ability to provide transition plans and support for students moving from one educational setting to another
- Ability to create alternative activities for independent work based on teacher-directed activities
- Ability to assist in the development and implementation of individual student schedules, sensory program, and motor group activities
