Job Summary
Conduct specialized instructional support services for students with diverse disabilities, including autism, behavioral challenges, and bilingual needs. Assist individuals in learning instructional media, taking tests, developing social behaviors, and mastering self-feeding, grooming, and toileting skills. Supervise students during snack, lunch, outdoor activities, and field trips while maintaining appropriate social interactions. Prepare records, perform clerical duties, and communicate regularly with the instructional team regarding student performance. Provide direct assistance with mobility, gross motor skills, and the use of assistive technology under site administrator supervision.
Required Qualifications
- high school diploma
- official transcripts showing at least two years of college (48 units) or an AA degree
- a passing score on our online proficiency exam (CBEST accepted in lieu of)
- Successful completion of the Instructional Assistant Proficiency Examination
- hold appropriate certification for the position
- Knowledge of the appropriate subject matter, program and special instructional or communication procedures
- Knowledge of the individual differences in children
- Knowledge of Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and mathematics
- Knowledge of General classroom procedures, practices and equipment
- Knowledge of General needs relative to students who are physically challenged and/or severely emotionally disturbed students
- Knowledge of Techniques of learning reinforcement and behavior modification for students
- Knowledge of Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of students with special needs
- Skill in Applying special instructional or communication procedures
- Skill in Following oral and written directions
- Skill in Communicating clearly both orally and in writing
- Skill in Recordkeeping
- Skill in Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with school staff, students and parents
- Skill in Reading, writing and arithmetic
- Skill in Keeping school and student matters confidential
- Skill in Understanding and appropriately responding to the needs of all students and to posses a genuine liking for students
- Ability to Perform the duties of the position with or without accommodation
- Ability to Learn to interpret rules, policies, regulations and policies
- A valid California Driver's License
- Certification in First Aid and CPR
- Ability to meet proficiency requirements as set forth in applicable state and federal laws and District Annual Notices (i.e. Mandated Reporting, Blood Borne Pathogen)
- Must successfully pass the District's pre-employment fingerprinting and TB testing
- Sufficient vision to monitor students during activities and to read instructional materials
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information and provide assistance to students and staff
- Frequently walking, reaching, holding with arms, bending at the waist, crouching and/or squatting to assist students
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to assist students and to operate specialized equipment or office equipment
- Pushing wheelchairs
- Lifting and/or manipulating objects or persons, and/or use of motion up to 25 lbs. or equivalent with or without assistance by another individual and/or with or without the assistance of devices designed to support the lifting effort
