Job Summary
Special Education Assistant II supports instructional staff in a K-12 and sometimes adult special education setting. Under supervision, you will assist with instructional tasks, adapt materials for students with special needs, monitor and reinforce appropriate social behaviors, and help students engage in classrooms and activities. Responsibilities include communicating with instructional teams, assisting with individual or small-group tasks, supporting usage of instructional media and testing tools, maintaining records, and aiding with self-care and mobility activities. The role may involve lifting up to 25 lbs, travel between locations, and requires a high school diploma with either 48 college units or an AA degree or successful completion of the CBEST/ proficiency pathway. Certification in First Aid and CPR is required every two years, along with district fingerprinting and TB testing. A valid California Driver’s License may be required. Knowledge and skills include understanding diverse student needs, behavior reinforcement, recordkeeping, and strong communication with students, parents, and staff.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma
- Official transcripts showing at least two years of college (48 units) or an AA degree OR passing score on CBEST (accepted in lieu)
- Ability to pass online proficiency exam if determined by HR
- Successful completion of Instructional Assistant Proficiency Examination and/or appropriate certification
- A valid California Driver’s License may be required
- Certification in First Aid and CPR required every 2 years
- District pre-employment fingerprinting and TB testing
- Ability to meet proficiency requirements as set forth by applicable laws and district notices
- Experience/work with students with special needs is preferred
- Willingness to travel between locations may be required
