Job Summary
Provide interpretation services within 3 hours of government request, including translation, transcription, and interpretation of legal, governmental, medical, financial, and other sensitive material. Requires specialized training or substantial court/legal interpretation experience in the target language, ILR 3 minimum or equivalent, and US citizenship with active security clearance. Must be fluent in English and the foreign language, able to handle formal and informal vocabularies, slang, and regionalisms, and proficient with CAT tools (SDL Trados Studio). Materials may be in diverse formats (documents, audio/video media, emails, spreadsheets) and cover topics from medical/autopsy reports to regulatory and court-related content. Privacy and confidentiality must be maintained. Remote work is possible in the US; on-site in National Capital Region (Washington, DC) and other CONUS locations may be required. Travel may be required.
Required Qualifications
- Specialized training in interpreting or extensive court/legal experience in required language
- Minimum of four (4) years of language interpretation experience in the required mode
- Qualifying ILR 3 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests
- Must have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S. (not necessarily consecutive)
- At least 1 year of experience with a law enforcement and/or legal department
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Bilingual proficiency in English and target language with formal/informal modes and regionalisms
- Knowledge of specialized vocabulary in government, legal, diplomatic contexts
- Ability to interpret accurately without changes, omissions, or additions
- Preserve tone and register of source material
- Adhere to linguist ethics
- Proficient with CAT tools, with emphasis on SDL Trados Studio
- Active Public Trust or higher security clearance
- Location flexibility for remote and CONUS-based assignments
- Ability to provide interpretation within 3 hours of government request
