Solid Waste Operator

Job Summary
Accept incoming recyclables and waste, inspect loads for hazardous materials, and properly sort, bail, and store materials in designated areas. Operate heavy off-road equipment including compactors, loaders, and backhoes to unload trucks, compact demolition waste, and maintain facility grounds. Communicate with the public and businesses regarding pickups and deliveries, direct traffic to appropriate sites, and charge contractors fees while issuing receipts. Maintain equipment through detailed service logs and inspections, and ensure compliance with state and federal regulatory guidelines. Work a flexible schedule in a fast-paced environment, handling frequent interruptions and extreme weather conditions. Obtain MPCA Type III certification within six months and complete OSHA HAZMAT training within one year of hire.
Required Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Valid class D driver's license
- Successfully pass a pre-placement screen
- Obtain Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) Type III Solid Waste Facility Operator Certification within 6 months of hire
- Complete OSHA Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) training within 1 year of hire
- Knowledge: General maintenance of heavy and light equipment
- Knowledge: Hazardous waste identification and handling
- Knowledge: Adhere to all laws, statutes, policies and rules with the essential level of confidentiality and safety required of the position
- Skills: Work safely using heavy equipment around public traffic
- Skills: Record keeping for load documentation, billing receipts, maintenance records, etc
- Skills: Proficient in using automated systems relevant to the position
- Skills: Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all stakeholders relevant to the position
- Skills: Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, accuracy, and problem solving
- Abilities: Work a flexible schedule
- Abilities: Work in heavy traffic areas, extreme weather conditions, fast-paced environment, independently
- Abilities: Complete job tasks in a timely manner with frequent interruptions, multi-task, detail oriented
- Abilities: Attend training/meetings/make deliveries, on an as needed basis
- Abilities: Establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Abilities: Follow established procedures and directives from supervisors
- Regular attendance on the job
- Performance of other duties as assigned
Desired Qualifications
- Valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with air
- Valid Class B CDL with air
- Work experience operating heavy equipment (i.e. compactor, bailer, backhoe, dozer, loader, garbage truck, semi, forklift, skidsteer, telehandler, material handler, hook-lift truck, horizontal grinder) and mechanical background
- Forklift certification
