Job Summary
Software Engineering Manager - AI Data Engine leading Motional’s Data Stack and ML dataset strategy. Responsible for building and guiding a high-performing data and infrastructure engineering team to store metrics, generate ML datasets for computer vision and behavioral models, and accelerate data loading, ingestion, and querying at petabyte scale. Defines technical vision, drives cross-functional collaboration with ML research, training platforms, and data engineering, and mentors engineers to advance careers. Requires 8+ years in data platform engineering, 3+ years in technical leadership, proficiency in Python (C++ a plus), experience with Parquet/Iceberg/Lance, and cloud AWS/GCP expertise. Role offers hybrid in-office work at Boston, MA; Las Vegas, NV; or Pittsburgh, PA, or fully remote in the US. Salary range $172,000–$229,000 with potential bonuses/equity; benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401k, HSA, life/pet insurance, and more.
Required Qualifications
- BS or MS in Computer Science or related field
- 8+ years of professional experience in data platform engineering
- 3+ years of experience in a technical lead or management role with 3-7 direct reports
- Extensive experience with managing large-scale data platforms (petabyte+ data warehouses, object storage, ML training data stores)
- Extensive experience with workflow orchestration frameworks (Airflow or Step Functions)
- Strong programming skills in Python; C++ is a plus
- Deep knowledge of data storage formats (Parquet, Iceberg, Lance)
- Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP) solutions
- Prior experience building data warehouses or lakehouse architectures for ML or robotics companies
- Bonus: autonomous vehicles experience; Bazel-based build systems
- Hybrid/in-office schedule at Boston, Pittsburgh, or Las Vegas or fully remote within US
