Software Engineer III, Data Product

Job Summary
Software Engineer III (Data Product) on Shippo's Data Products team, primarily backend (around 70%) with meaningful frontend work (around 30%). Responsible for building and maintaining Python (FastAPI) services, designing event-driven data synchronization (Kafka), and implementing data models and APIs for customer-facing data products, analytics, and rule-driven experiences. Frontend work includes React UI surfaces for data product features such as dashboards, configuration tools, and management interfaces, integrated with backend APIs. Experience with rule engines, evaluation logic, or decision systems is highly valued. Collaborates across data science/ML teams to bring model outputs into production services, designs with auditability (versioning, immutable logs, traceable decisions), and contributes to team goals, design reviews, and incident responses. Bonus: domain experience in shipping/logistics or prior experience building rule engines and workflows, familiarity with LLM-based features. Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong Python backend skills; FastAPI experience preferred
- Hands-on experience with event-driven systems (Kafka or equivalent)
- Solid PostgreSQL skills: schema design, query optimization, migrations, and data modeling at scale
- Production-level React experience: component architecture, state management, API integration, and UI testing
