Job Summary

Contract, union-maintained Maintenance Mechanic role at Cornell. Responsibilities include responding to facilities trouble calls (including emergencies), independently assessing and troubleshooting issues, coordinating with trades for overtime as needed, alerting occupants to dangerous conditions, documenting maintenance activities and billable hours, and performing routine and preventive maintenance on HVACR and related building systems across commercial/industrial facilities. Requires high school diploma or equivalent, at least five years in building trades or related mechanical experience, valid US driver’s license, strong communication and customer-service skills, ability to read blueprints/manuals, proficiency with test equipment (multimeters, tension meters, alignment tools), familiarity with HVAC/utilities/controls, ability to lift 100 lbs, and the stamina to work in confined spaces and extend hours including nights and weekends to meet seasonal demand. Must foster inclusive working relationships, and Visa sponsorship is not available. Includes extensive Cornell benefits and a pathway to continued professional development; onsite role based in Ithaca, NY with union employment through UAW.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in building trades or other relevant mechanical experience
  • Must have and maintain a valid US driver’s license
  • Must have excellent communication skills, verbal and written
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience working in a team environment to accomplish goals
  • Ability to read and interpret blue prints, drawings, tech manuals and detailed work instructions
  • Ability to use common test equipment such as multi-meters, tension meters, alignment tools etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HVAC, utilities, controls, and other support systems in a high technology environment
  • Demonstrated ability to use computers
  • Must be able to lift and/or move 100lbs
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Delivers heavy material to workers
  • The ability to ascend and descend heights and have agility and freedom of movement
  • Climbs stairs and ladders
  • Able to move easily in confined spaces
  • Must be able to wear a respirator
