Job Summary

Tutor individuals or small groups of students while reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed by a certificated teacher. Monitor and report student progress, behavior, and English proficiency through test administration, scoring, and record maintenance. Prepare and organize lessons, set up work areas, and operate audiovisual and educational equipment. Assist in administering diagnostic tests, manage classroom supplies, and oversee student activities during labs, lunch, and field trips. Provide emotional support, guidance, and safety monitoring for students. Participate in instructional team meetings, in-service training, and emergency drills. Contact parents regarding absences and make home visits as necessary. Maintain attendance and classroom records while performing related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 48 college credit hours
  • A passing score on the Paraeducator Assessment given by the district
  • High school diploma
  • GED Certificate
  • Demonstrated progress toward obtaining a GED
  • Some experience in working with children in an organized setting
  • Knowledge of basic subjects taught in the district schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading
  • Knowledge of safe practices in classroom and playground activities
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
  • Knowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Knowledge of basic record-keeping techniques
  • Ability to learn child guidance principles and practices
  • Ability to communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and the public including members of ethnic communities
  • Ability to print and write legibly
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Ability to learn procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to learn to apply and explain policies and procedures related to school and program activities
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Ability to monitor, observe and report students' behavior according to approved policies and procedures
  • Ability to operate instructional and office equipment
  • Ability to work confidentially with discretion
  • Punctual and regular in attendance
