Signal Apprentice in Minneapolis, MN, a full-time apprenticeship program encompassing roles such as Signalman, Signal Maintainer, and Shop Signalman. The role involves construction, reconditioning, installation, maintenance, repair, inspection, and testing of wayside signal devices; installation of underground and overhead cables; work around heavy machinery and in variable conditions; extensive travel (up to 90%), on-call and overtime duties, and a safety-focused environment within a unionized setting. On-the-job and classroom training with company-paid training, progressive pay increases by qualification, and relocation assistance not available. Successful candidates enter an apprenticeship program with progressive exams and field proficiency expectations.
Required Qualifications
- Able to work now and in the future without company sponsorship (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN)
- At least 18 years of age
- Possess a valid state-issued driver's license
- Ability to report for duty at the designated work location
- Ability to travel for extended periods (fly, drive, or ride)
- Able to work safely in required conditions and shifts
- Able to read, write, and communicate in English
- Able to lift and carry specified weights (up to 60 lbs occasionally and 15-30 lbs frequently)
- Able to visually distinguish colors (red, blue, green, yellow)
- Ability to perceive signals/alarms in the work environment
- Able to use hands and hand tools for holding, grasping, turning, pushing, and pulling
- Frequently climb ladders; get on/off equipment; climb signal poles/platforms
- Bend, walk, stand, or sit for periods; follow safety policies and wear PPE
- Union membership with Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen; seniority-based positions and transfers
