Job Summary
Provide in-class support and signed or oral communication support for a deaf and hard of hearing student and other students with sensory impairments. Responsibilities include assisting with instructional activities and materials, participating in professional development for interpreting to deaf and hard of hearing students, coordinating with the educational team, adhering to policies, and maintaining professional interactions with staff and students. The role requires BEI certification progression, familiarity with IEPs, confidentiality, and ability to work across campuses with regular attendance. Equipment includes standard office and assistive devices; physical demands involve standing, lifting, and exposure to health-related risks. The position emphasizes collaboration, ongoing training, and supporting students’ communication needs in a classroom setting.
Required Qualifications
- Associates degree related to interpreting or in the field of deaf education preferred
- Passed the BEI Test of English Proficiency preferred
- MUST RECEIVE FULL BEI CERTIFICATION AFTER THREE YEARS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Ability to establish and maintain conversations using sign language
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work with children with disabilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Minimum clerical skills
- Knowledge of working with students
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training in the area of interpreting to deaf and hard of hearing students
- Regular and reliable attendance
- Attend team and professional meetings as required
- Seek out and participate in a minimum of six hours per semester in professional development with the goal of passing the BEI performance interpreter test
- Attempt the receptive and expressive interpreter certification test at least once within the two-year time frame
