Job Summary
Provide real-time interpretation between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL) for students, teachers, and school staff during instruction, meetings, assessments, and extracurricular activities. Facilitate communication to ensure full accessibility for deaf or hard of hearing learners while interpreting and adapting educational materials as needed. Work collaboratively with special education staff to support student learning experiences, advocate for accessibility needs in compliance with IDEA and ADA regulations, and maintain strict confidentiality. Participate in ongoing training to enhance interpretation skills and best practices in educational settings. Full-time role of 37.5 hours per week starting August 2026 for the 26/27 school year in Aurora, IL.
Required Qualifications
- ISBE approval or IDHHC
- Associate's OR Bachelor's degree in American Sign Language Interpretation, Deaf Studies, or a related field
- National Interpreter Certification (NIC), Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Score of 3.5 or higher, or equivalent certification
- Proficiency in ASL and English, with strong receptive and expressive skills
- Understanding of educational settings, including knowledge of special education laws and practices
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
- Previous experience working as an interpreter or translator in an educational or community setting
- Cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds and experiences
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport and build trust with students, families, and school staff
- Professionalism and discretion in handling sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality
- Flexibility and adaptability to work in various school settings and accommodate diverse communication needs
- Must be able to stand, move between classrooms, and interact with students and staff
- Must have continuous hand and arm movements for ASL communication
- Must be able to interpret in both one-on-one and group settings
- Must be able to lift or move objects weighing up to 30 pounds

- Bilingual proficiency in ASL
- Familiarity with assistive technologies used by students who are deaf or hard of hearing
