Job Summary
Fabricate templates for bending ship structures, frames, and bulkheads while assisting with measurements, layout, and cutting. Perform layout, fabrication, and installation of structural parts such as plates, braces, and frames, then brace structures for welding. Complete pre and post weld checks, and perform chipping, beveling, grinding, and cleaning of surfaces using power and hand tools. Deliver materials as required, maintain worksite cleanliness, and participate in special projects. Travel to other locations as needed.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED
- 1+ years of experience in the shipfitting trade
- Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain a security badge for all military installations and civilian shipyards as needed
- Must be able to read and understand material safety data sheets (MDS)
- Able to follow safety procedures
- Must possess basic computer skills to enter data into different data basis
- Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
- Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and/or hear
- Must be able to work on a ship
- Must be able to work near moving mechanical parts or in a confined space
- Must be able to regularly be exposed to fumes or airborne particles
