Job Summary

Layout and fabricate metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, for riveting or welding within the hull of ships. Brace parts in position using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, and wedges. Prepare molds and templates for nonstandard parts according to specifications. Mark reference lines and locate holes to be drilled, then install temporary fasteners to hold parts in place for welding or riveting. Accountable for completion of daily work assignments and flag cranes as required. Work with minimal supervision while complying with company, Federal, State, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules. Regular attendance is required, including flexible hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays. This position involves physically active tasks including standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, with potential exposure to heights, confined spaces, and extreme temperatures.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Three to five years of shipfitting experience
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct marine vessels
  • Ability to cut and burn with a torch or plasma cutter
  • Tack weld with 7018 6011 stainless rod, mig, and aluminum
  • Knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and OSHA regulations
  • Ability to read and comprehend written, oral, or diagram forms
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints
  • Knowledge of the safe operation and use of hand and power tools
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure
  • Ability to read a tape measure
