Job Summary
Oversee the emergency shelter during assigned shifts to ensure smooth operations, maintain safety, and secure a safe setting for all participants. Meet with day staff at shift start to review updates and the Shelter Communication Book. Prepare for incoming guests by completing paperwork, consent forms, and the intake process. Monitor participant behaviors with constant supervision and enact safety or emergency plans as necessary. This role supports Bethesda House's goal to end the cycle of poverty and homelessness by providing hands-on help to the most vulnerable in Schenectady County.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Two to five years' prior work experience in a related field
- Strong communications skills
- Ability to operate the agency phone system in a clear and professional manner
- Computer literacy including the ability to work with automated output and the ability to enter data in automated systems
- Experience working with the homeless population
- Experience working with people who have mental illness
- Experience working with people who have substance abuse history
- Experience working with diverse populations
- Ability to recognize and respond to an emergency
- Professional demeanor
- Ability to represent the agency positively in all interactions
- Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Demonstrated resourcefulness

Desired Qualifications
- Availability to work hours above normally scheduled work hours in an emergency to cover front desk duties
