Job Summary
Sheet Metal Trainee role offering a two-week unpaid training program to learn the sheet metal trade. The trainee will work in the Newport News Shipbuilding Sheet Metal Department, gaining foundational techniques and hands-on experience fabricating, assembling, and installing components on aircraft carriers and submarines. The program partners with local colleges and maritime facilities and runs 7:00am–3:30pm, Monday–Friday, in Portsmouth, VA, with emphasis on safety, physical agility, and adaptability in challenging environments. The role involves using hand tools, power equipment, and learning basic sheet metal techniques including tack welding; no prior trades experience required. The position is full-time, requires travel (10–25%), and does not provide relocation assistance. Applicants must be 18+, legally eligible to work in the U.S., pass the two-week unpaid training, and meet physical requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S.
- Must complete two-week unpaid training (80 hours)
- Must pass a background check and drug screen
- Must pass physical agility test
- Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds
- Must wear a respirator (clean shaven)
- Must work outdoors in all weather
- Must be able to work overtime
- Must be able to perform overhead work
- Must be able to work in confined spaces
- Must be able to take measurements or be willing to learn
