Job Summary
Sheet Metal Worker at Newport News Shipbuilding. Responsibilities include fabricating, assembling and installing Sheet Metal components for Aircraft Carriers, Submarines, and surface ships, following detailed technical work documents. Use tools such as drills, rivet guns, grinders, miter saws, band saws, nibblers, plasma arc cutters, rollers, shears, press brakes, and CNC fabricators. Training is provided (basic sheet metal/tack welding and job-specific training). Must present appropriate certificates or diplomas in related fields and meet physical requirements (lift 40 lbs, respirator fit test, agility tests). High school vocational/related certifications preferred. Work requires standing at heights and in confined spaces; shift may vary; no relocation assistance; no telework; US citizenship may be required for some roles.
Required Qualifications
- Certificate or diploma in Sheet Metal fabrication, HVAC, Facility Maintenance, Autobody/Automotive repair, Residential/Commercial Construction, Welding, Carpentry or a directly related field from a recognized program (high school vocational, community college, trade school, technical college, apprenticeship, post-secondary, or military equivalent)
