Job Summary
Layout, fabricate, and install sheet metal parts up to 1/8 inch thickness, including bulkheads, lockers, and brackets, using templates prepared for nonstandard components. Assist with measurements, cutting, grinding, and cleaning surfaces for welding or riveting, then fasten panels using riveting and mechanical fastening methods. Perform fire watch duties, deliver materials as required, and conduct housekeeping to maintain worksite cleanliness. Travel to other locations for work as needed. Work on a ship with occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and confined spaces.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED, plus technical/vocational training or the equivalent combination
- Typically requires 1+ years related experience
- Must be able to read and understand blueprints and specifications
- Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain a security badge for all military installations and civilian shipyards as needed
- Must be able to read and understand material safety data sheets (MDS)
- Able to follow safety procedures
- Must possess basic computer skills to enter data into different data basis
- Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
