Job Summary

Provide reference service during evenings and weekends at the Shannon Library's primary desk, online via Ask-a-Librarian, and over the phone. Assist patrons in finding information for research, library visits, or specialist connections by utilizing resources like Virgo, the library catalog, and research guides. Handle basic circulation duties including checking out, discharging, and renewing materials, while maintaining library order and assisting with physical space navigation. Support Reference Team projects such as editing manuals and entering metadata for indexing. Work a minimum of 7 hours and up to 20 hours per week, with preference for weekend availability and exam week coverage.

Required Qualifications

  • Preference is given to individuals available to work both weeknights and weekends

  • Customer service experience
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn about a wide variety of library resources
  • Ability to make decisions autonomously and with confidence
  • Attention to detail
  • Dependability
  • An amicable attitude
  • The ability to meet the tone of the patron
  • Full-time registered graduate students (in SIS)
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Must work a minimum of 7 hrs/week
  • Must be able to work weekends and during exam week periods
  • Must be able to find a substitute for that shift if unable to work an assigned shift
  • Must be able to push a full book cart and lift 15 pounds
  • Must be able to read printed labels

  • Be able to communicate verbally in a clear manner
  • Be able to type at a reasonable pace using good grammar and spelling for our chat service
  • Be able to provide welcoming service to all library patrons (in person, on the telephone, and via chat) in a courteous, efficient manner
  • Be able to push a full book cart and lift 15 pounds
