Sewing Machine Operator I

Job Summary
Operate sewing machines to join, gather, hem, reinforce, or decorate articles by threading spools, inserting bobbins, and controlling machine speed with pedals or levers. Guide parts under the needle, observe stitching for defects, and notify supervisors of machine malfunctions. Select sewing supplies like thread, piping, and tape according to specifications, cut excess material, and oil the machine. Read work orders, sales orders, and drawings while maintaining a clean environment and following all safety protocols. For advanced levels, assist with special projects, provide direction to peers, and lead teams with strong communication and problem-solving skills. Must pass forklift certification and drive a forklift.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- One to three months related experience and/or training
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Must be able to pass forklift certification test and drive a forklift
- Must be able to stand
- Must be able to walk
- Must be able to use hands to finger, handle, or feel
- Must be able to reach with hands and arms
- Must be able to talk or hear
- Must be able to climb or balance
- Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
