Job Summary
Service Mechanic in the Des Moines Public Schools Transportation department responsible for automotive corrective, preventative, and service maintenance on district vehicles and equipment. Provides guidance to mechanic assistants, assists Fleet Maintenance Specialist with workload distribution and maintenance records, and may assist in dispatch/routing and bus driving as needed. Requires high school diploma or GED, vocational qualifications, ability to obtain CDL and School Bus Operator permit within 60 days, strong automotive mechanics knowledge, computer skills, effective communication, and adaptability to diverse environments. Working conditions include physical demands and outdoor/indoor environments; 260 workdays per year, 8-hour shifts.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma, HiSET or GED
- Vocational certification or relevant qualifications as determined by the district
- Ability and willingness to obtain a Commercial driver’s license (CDL) within 60 days on the job.
- Ability and willingness to obtain a State of Iowa School Bus Operators permit within 60 days on the job with necessary endorsements.
- Theoretical and practical working knowledge of automotive mechanics
- Ability and willingness to acquire specialized training as determined by the district
- Working knowledge and skill in the use of a computer
- Effective communication skills
- Competency working in a culturally diverse environment or the willingness to acquire these skills.
- Five years of recent, relevant experience in an automotive service garage
