Job Summary
Senior Technical Artist to bridge Art direction and Engineering, owning and optimizing the art production pipeline. Responsibilities include designing and maintaining complex in-engine materials, shaders, and lighting; enforcing technical specifications for art content; identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks; assisting Art with asset implementation; developing tools and processes to streamline content authoring; advancing the art production pipeline and ensuring data integrity between software like Maya/Blender/Substance and the game engine. Also serves as primary technical liaison across Art, Design, and Engineering; mentoring mid-level and junior artists; creating clear technical documentation; identifying technical debt and proposing long-term solutions; staying current with engine updates and industry trends. Requires strong problem-solving, cross-discipline collaboration, and a proactive, communicative approach. The role is Full Time, permanent, Hybrid in Australia (Box Hill, VIC) with locations in Adelaide/Brisbane/Melbourne as noted in the posting.
Required Qualifications
- Approximately 5-7 years of professional experience in the games industry
- Strong foundational knowledge of the art pipeline and hands-on experience in art and animation content creation
- Demonstrated skills across Shader development, VFX/Particles, Pipeline and tool development, and Real-time physics simulations
- Proficiency in scripting and coding in one or more core languages
- Hands-on development experience with modern commercial game engines
- Strong attention to detail, time management, problem-solving and communication skills
- Desirable familiarity with AAA game development, console platforms (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox)
- Experience with DCC packages (Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, Adobe Suite) and advanced skills in at least one development package (Houdini, EmberGen, After Effects, Substance)
- Ability to design, implement and maintain complex in-engine materials, shaders, and lighting within rendering budgets
- Ability to lead pipeline improvements, tooling, and collaboration between Art, Design and Engineering teams
- Proactive in researching, implementing, and documenting technical solutions across the development team
