Senior/Staff Software Engineer - Embedded Linux Operating Systems

Job Summary
Design and maintain the operating system platform powering on-bot devices and applications for Zoox's autonomous vehicle fleet. Architect and implement scalable robotics infrastructure software, configuring embedded Linux build systems like Yocto and bootloader processes such as U-Boot to ensure reliable startup. Develop and optimize device drivers and kernel-space components in C, C++, or Rust to meet performance and reliability requirements while collaborating cross-functionally on hardware bring-up and manufacturing support. This role focuses on foundational systems managing startup behavior, runtime settings, and software/hardware configuration across vehicles and cities to keep the robotaxi fleet running smoothly.
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years delivering production systems and software applications
- 2+ years of delivering custom Embedded Linux operating systems
- Deep understanding of Linux
- Experience with build systems like Yocto
- Experience with bootloaders like U-Boot
- Familiarity with Linux init systems (e.g., systemd)
- Familiarity with containerization concepts (e.g., chroot, cgroups, Linux namespaces)
- Familiarity with filesystems
- Understanding of device drivers and kernel-space code
- Proficiency in a language without automatic memory management (e.g., C or C++)
- Proficiency in multiple scripting languages like bash and Python
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with embedded Linux in a robotics application
- Familiarity with security software: PKI, secure boot, OTA software update, hardware key storage, etc.
- Familiarity with Nvidia GPUs, Nvidia Thor/Orin, Cuda, TRT, etc.
- Graduate degree with a focus on networking, operating systems, or firmware
