Senior / Staff Software Engineer – Core Data Infrastructure
$300,000–$300,000 year
On-siteToronto, Ontario, Canada
Job Summary
Design, build, and optimize high-throughput data processing systems for real-time streaming and batch ingestion. Engineer robust storage solutions handling terabytes of time-series and spatial data while driving architectural decisions for fault tolerance and aggressive scaling. Develop intelligent, automated tooling to improve data quality, lineage tracking, and system reliability. Write scalable, production-ready code primarily in Java and Python, collaborating with internal stakeholders to define reusable technical abstractions. This foundational backend role requires a proven track record of maintaining distributed systems at petabyte scale with deep expertise in JVM languages and modern large-scale processing frameworks. Engineers own their domains end-to-end with high autonomy, speaking directly with customers to understand friction points before implementation.
Required Qualifications
- A proven track record of designing and maintaining distributed backend systems or data platforms that process data at the terabyte or petabyte scale
- Deep expertise in computer science fundamentals, system architecture, and anticipating failure modes in complex networks
- Advanced proficiency in a JVM language (Java, Scala, Kotlin)
- Hands-on experience with modern large-scale processing frameworks (e.g., event streaming, distributed computation, and advanced data warehousing/lakehouse concepts)
- High comfort level navigating ambiguity
- Ability to scope complex problems
- Ability to make definitive architectural calls
- Ability to drive projects to completion independently
Desired Qualifications
- Active contributions to open-source software, particularly in the distributed systems or data infrastructure space
- Familiarity with modern orchestration engines
- Familiarity with lakehouse architectures
- Familiarity with spatio-temporal data models
