Senior Staff Engineer, Grid Modelling and Compliance

Job Summary

Conduct grid studies and develop power system models for renewable generation and HVDC facilities using industry-standard platforms like PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD, and ASPEN Oneliner. Assist in tuning power plant controllers with OEMs to meet grid code performance requirements while maintaining current knowledge of NERC standards and IEEE specifications. Support interconnection, project engineering, and operations teams through performance studies, commissioning support, and forensic analyses. Communicate technical findings to internal and external stakeholders via detailed reports and presentations, and attend coordination meetings with Independent System Operators and utilities. This on-site role in downtown Chicago requires occasional travel and collaboration across engineering, transmission, and generation groups.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or similar field
  • 2+ years of professional experience performing power system studies such as power flow analysis, transient stability, EMT analysis, and short circuit analysis
  • Experience with using power system modelling tools such as PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD and ASPEN Oneliner
  • Knowledge of EHV/HV electrical infrastructure (substations/switchyards, transmission lines, transformers, collector systems, etc.)
  • Project management skills and ability to coordinate work with different internal and external stakeholders including engineering firms and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)
  • Ability to travel occasionally, if needed (up to 15%)
  • Eligible to work in the United States without the need for employer visa sponsorship now or in the future
  • This position is on-site at Invenergy's office in downtown Chicago, IL

Desired Qualifications

  • Specialized coursework in power system analysis, power electronics and control systems
  • Knowledge of renewable generation operation, design, and control
  • Programming experience in Python, VBA, or other languages
  • Strong communication (verbal/written) and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements and provide recommendations
  • Strong organization and planning skills with the ability to manage tasks across multiple projects
  • Knowledge of NERC standards related to grid modeling, IEEE 2800 – 2022, IEEE P2800.2, WECC and various independent system operators
