Senior / Staff Backend Engineer – Core Platform

Job Summary
Lead end-to-end design and deployment of robust, scalable backend services and public-facing APIs in a cloud-native AWS environment. Engineer fault-tolerant integration layers that reliably ingest, normalize, and process unpredictable data from third-party vendors. Develop foundational platform components including workflow orchestration, authentication, and system monitoring. Interface directly with enterprise clients to map integration strategies, resolve technical roadblocks, and understand user needs. Champion engineering standards and introduce automated tooling to scale development velocity. This high-visibility role focuses on architecting the core product and API layer for a rapidly scaling B2B infrastructure startup building a high-volume data ingestion platform. The team operates out of a downtown Toronto office four days a week.
Required Qualifications
- Extensive experience designing, deploying, and maintaining distributed systems and APIs at a massive scale
- Deep production expertise in TypeScript and Node.js
- A strong track record of taming messy, complex external APIs and turning them into reliable, clean data pipelines
- You are not looking to hide in the backend
- You enjoy being on implementation calls and acting as a technical authority for enterprise customers
- You thrive in ambiguous environments
- Can scope complex projects independently
- Have the judgment to balance technical perfection with business velocity
- Predominantly On-Site
- The engineering team strongly believes in the velocity of in-person collaboration
- Operates out of a downtown Toronto office 4 days a week
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with event-driven or serverless architectures in AWS
- Familiarity with modern asynchronous workflow orchestrators
- Exposure to JVM languages
