Job Summary
Senior Staff Software Engineer on Coupang's Gateway Services team responsible for designing and evolving the Service Mesh platform that powers Coupang’s traffic infrastructure at scale. Lead the development of fine-grained traffic control using Istio, Envoy, Kubernetes, ArgoCD, and SPIFFE; drive architectural decisions, establish best practices, and evangelize Service Mesh concepts across the organization. Collaborate with cross-functional platform teams to solve complex infrastructure problems and build a scalable, future-oriented platform that supports Coupang’s rapid growth.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related technical field
- 12+ years of software development experience with at least 2+ years in a Technical Lead role
- Experience in designing and implementing traffic management solutions for large-scale systems
- Hands-on experience in designing and building large-scale distributed systems within the past 3 years
- Strong experience in designing and implementing traffic management solutions at scale
- Proven expertise in Service Mesh technologies (e.g., Istio, Envoy)
- Strong programming skills in Go, Rust, or C++, with a track record of delivering mission-critical systems
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to independently drive complex technical initiatives
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across cross-functional teams
Desired Qualifications
- Deep understanding of networking fundamentals including VPCs, subnets, routing, gateways, and service networking
- Strong knowledge of modern microservices architecture and API design patterns at scale
- Experience building high-performance, large-scale distributed systems
- Experience with Kubernetes ecosystem tools (e.g., ArgoCD, SPIFFE)
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and lead large-scale project delivery
- Experience providing technical leadership in platform or infrastructure engineering teams
- Demonstrated ability to influence organization-wide technical decisions and drive engineering excellence
