Job Summary
Senior Software Engineer at Visa responsible for leading cross-functional squads in designing and evolving an industry-leading API powering cross-border payments. Owns and mentors backend services, contributing to high-availability, cloud-native microservice architecture on AWS with Kubernetes. Drives technical direction, system design, and OpenAPI-driven boundaries between customers and products. Works on a modern Java/Spring backend (Java 11+), leveraging Docker, EKS, Kafka, Terraform and observability tooling (Datadog), with a focus on TDD/BDD/Contract testing, CI/CD, and DevOps practices. The role involves collaboration with Product Owners and QA, delivering well-tested, scalable solutions, and operating within a hybrid UK-based presence with a minimum of three days in the London office.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years experience in Java Backend Development
- Skills with functional Java (versions 8+) and Spring (ideally Springboot)
- Agile ways of working such as Scrum or Kanban in cross-functional teams
- Expert knowledge of Docker, EKS, AWS (public cloud) and Kafka
- Ability to communicate equally effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Modern Cloud-Native architectures and practices
- CI/CD, heavy testing automation and observability
- TDD, BDD and Contract testing
- Working in a DevOps environment, or willingness to work in this way
- Proven delivery of well-tested, scalable, fault-tolerant and performant solutions
- A pragmatic approach to solutions and delivery of technical projects
- A self-starter who takes accountability for getting things done
- Pragmatism in decision making and ability to get buy-in for ideas and getting them done
- Exceptional structure and attention to detail
- Great written and verbal communication skills
- Comfortable working in a scale-up or growth environment and as part of a wider team
