Job Summary
Senior Software Engineer (part-time, fixed-term) at USC in the Psychology Department, contributing to an interactive online learning platform that supplements Pathways-to-Success for 8th graders. Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and a UI/UX designer to translate wireframes into a scalable web application with intuitive navigation and collaborative features. Maintain and enhance the Pathways-to-Success teacher resource website with a focus on backend maintainability and performance. Implement observability through logs and metrics, write documentation and unit tests, support user research and usability testing, and ensure accessibility, responsiveness, and a cohesive design system. Key technologies include Typescript, React, Redux, Node.js, SQL databases, and UI/UX prototyping tools; familiarity with BI tools (Metabase/Tableau) is a bonus. Strong communication and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams, plus a passion for education and learning science, are valued. Bonus skills include A/B testing, FeatureFlags, and local deployment for demonstrations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in computer science or computer engineering
- 5+ years of professional software development experience
- Strong proficiency in frontend technologies: Typescript, React, Redux
- Strong proficiency in backend technologies: Node.js
- Solid experience with SQL databases
- Experience with debugging and development tools (Chrome DevTools, Postman)
- Experience managing end-to-end web applications and API practices
- Basic proficiency with UI/UX design tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD) and prototyping tools (e.g., InVision, Axure, Framer)
- Familiarity with responsive design principles and accessibility standards (WCAG)
- Bonus: Experience with Metabase or Tableau
- Bonus: Familiarity with Pathways-to-Success program
