Job Summary
Senior Backend Engineer focused on Java-based backend services and serverless architectures, with additional frontend contributions as needed. You will design, develop, and optimize scalable shared backend services using Java and serverless technologies (AWS Lambda), build RESTful APIs and event-driven systems, and contribute frontend components when appropriate. You’ll optimize performance and cost, collaborate with Architects, Product Managers, and engineering leads, mentor junior developers, implement CI/CD pipelines, maintain high-quality code through testing and peer reviews, and produce comprehensive documentation. The role emphasizes distributed systems, data modeling, and delivering reliable software for Turnitin’s education platform, with remote-first collaboration across Europe and the USA.
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of backend development experience
- Proficiency in Java
- Experience with serverless frameworks (AWS Lambda)
- Hands-on frontend experience (React, Web Components)
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and data modeling
- Experience with cloud technologies and AWS serverless stack (Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, SNS/SQS/EventBridge)
- Experience with CI/CD tools and automation
- Mentoring and guiding junior engineers
- Effective communication in agile environments
