Job Summary
Design and continuously improve observability platforms, pipelines, and tooling used by all Canva engineers. Provide technical leadership to drive pragmatic solutions and optimize metrics, continuous profiling, and monitoring user experience. Proactively advocate for best practices in querying, visualization, and reliability while guiding other engineers in the observability space. Identify cross-functional solutions to ensure developers maximize insights from metrics and profiling SDKs. Participate in team ceremonies, knowledge sharing, and brainstorming sessions to refine operational effectiveness.
Required Qualifications
- Proficient and happy to code in Python, Golang, and/or Java
- Deep knowledge and understanding of Computer Engineering fundamentals and first principles
- Proficient with infrastructure-as-code, specifically Terraform and Jsonnet
- Practical experience with and knowledge of AWS services (EC2, EKS, Lambda, SQS, Kinesis, S3, MSK)
- Experience with Observability technologies, specifically tools like Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry
- Experience with highly reliable and available high throughput distributed data pipeline systems
- Experience with highly scalable databases
- Experience with Kubernetes, particularly running stateful workloads at scale
- Experience with data security, data obfuscation
- Experience with alerting and SLA/SLO theory and industry best practices
- Must be based in Sydney
- Must be available for hybrid work (remote and on-campus)
Desired Qualifications
- Deep experience with OpenTelemetry
- Experience designing, building, and running metrics and monitoring infrastructure at a large scale
- Experience with distributed Prometheus clusters (Thanos, Cortex, Mimir, M3)
- Experience with data handling / pipelining at scale (specifically Kinesis and Kafka)
- Experience with data security, data obfuscation
