Senior Software Engineer - New Markets Japan (JLPT N1 Fluent)

Job Summary
Senior Backend engineer for the Japan market to design, implement, and maintain brokerage systems and services that support Alpaca’s platform for millions of users. Responsibilities include developing middle- and back-office systems (including gRPC microservices, REST and gRPC APIs, and third-party vendor integrations specific to Japan such as JPX, JSCC, JASDEC, banks, and identity verification vendors), collaborating with global teams to enable multi-language and multi-currency support, coordinating with regulators, vendors, and business stakeholders in Japanese, troubleshooting incidents to maintain 24x7 reliability during Japan business hours, and mentoring teammates while aligning with Japan-specific regulatory and accounting requirements (e.g., NISA, MyNumber, withholding tax). Must be fluent in Japanese (JLPT N1) and proficient in English for cross-regional collaboration; experience with domain-driven design, event-driven design, and scalable financial applications is preferred.
Required Qualifications
- JLPT N1 fluency in Japanese (native or professional)
- Business-level English
- Experience designing and developing complex financial systems
- Proficiency in at least one statically typed language (Go, Rust, Java, Kotlin, C#, Scala, or C++)
- Experience with financial APIs, market data integrations, and trade settlement processes
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance in financial markets (Japan preferred)
- Strong CS fundamentals and software architecture experience
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote, globally distributed team
