Job Summary
Own the payments domain end to end on the kiosk platform, including authorization, capture, void, refund, reversal, settlement, and reconciliation. Re-architect the platform into a pluggable payment SDK with a versioned contract, then implement new terminal integrations down to byte-level protocols like TLV/BMP/APDU and USB serial. Build the integration test harness to validate simulations before hardware deployment and set patterns for idempotency, concurrency, and PCI-DSS scope minimization. Lead architecture reviews, mentor engineers, and partner with security on audits. This role requires 6+ years in Java, SPI-based architecture, and low-level device communication, with a salary of $150,000-$185,000. Based in San Diego, CA, with hybrid work.
Required Qualifications
- Must be based in San Diego, CA
- 6+ years back-end engineering
- Strong Java
- Solid OOP and distributed-systems design
- Demonstrated experience designing extensible / plugin / SPI-based architectures
- Hands-on low-level device and protocol experience: serial and/or USB communication and binary protocol implementation
- Direct payment-terminal / POS integration experience
- Clear understanding of integrated vs. semi-integrated models
- Solid grasp of the card transaction lifecycle
- Solid grasp of PCI-DSS boundaries, tokenization, and TLS/mTLS in production
- Track record of technical leadership: leading designs, setting standards, and mentoring engineers
Desired Qualifications
- EMV, ISO 8583, ZVT, or OPI
- Cash automation and recyclers (Vynamic Cash or similar), end-of-day and reconciliation tooling
- Regional acquiring experience (LatAm, EU, Middle East) and multi-currency payments
- Loyalty, stored-value, gift, or wallet (Apple Pay / Google Pay) integration
- Vendor certification experience with acquirers and processors; 3-D Secure / SCA, fraud/risk tooling
