Job Summary
Senior Software Engineer, Autonomous Lab role at Ginkgo Bioworks across multiple Catalyst teams. Responsible for end-to-end delivery of large/complex software features, ownership of components across the lifecycle, and contributing to architectural improvements. Work with scientists, operators, and other engineering teams to translate requirements into durable software solutions; design interfaces and contracts; participate in design reviews. Build automated tests, observability, and fault-tolerance; contribute to incident response and post-mortems. Mentor less senior engineers, contribute to hiring and documentation, and apply AI tooling to accelerate development with strong engineering judgment. Key technical areas include Python (with C#/.NET and TypeScript/React variations by team), APIs/services, Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, and deployments (including on-prem). Roles require work on-site in Boston, MA or Emeryville, CA three days a week (Tue-Thu) with relocation assistance available; US work authorization; no H-1B sponsorship.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- 5 years of experience in a software development role
- Strong proficiency in Python; additional language experience (C#/.NET, TypeScript/React) as noted in team descriptions
- Experience designing and operating production software — APIs, services, or systems
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
