Job Summary
Design and maintain scalable backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and Hibernate while developing high-performance microservices and RESTful APIs. Implement event-driven architectures with Kafka, define API standards and versioning strategies, and build resilient integrations with internal and third-party systems. Lead production incident investigations, perform root cause analysis, and drive platform modernization by reducing technical debt and consolidating legacy systems. Provide technical leadership through architecture reviews, code reviews, and mentoring engineers in Agile environments. This role spans a wide breadth of experience at Rush Street Interactive, welcoming candidates with diverse experiences, backgrounds, and locations.
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of professional software development experience with strong backend engineering expertise
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience
- Advanced experience with Java and frameworks such as Spring Boot, Hibernate, and Dropwizard
- Proven experience designing distributed systems, microservices, RESTful APIs, and backend integration patterns
- Strong knowledge of event-driven architecture and messaging platforms such as Kafka
- Experience with relational databases, including PostgreSQL and Oracle
- Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows, DevOps practices, and AWS
- Solid understanding of observability, including logging, monitoring, metrics, tracing, and production diagnostics
- Experience leading technical discussions, making architectural decisions, and mentoring engineers in Agile environments
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to travel occasionally, both domestically and internationally
