Senior R&D Electromagnetic Analysis Engineer

Job Summary

Perform electromagnetic analysis of superconducting magnets using finite element methods to inform design decisions for SPARC subsystems. Develop new numerical tools to facilitate multi-objective design optimization of high-temperature superconducting magnets and perform non-linear, highly-anisotropic simulations in complicated geometries. Work with experimental teams to validate simulations against data, correlate models to measurements, and prepare reports and presentations. Mentor new team members in magnet design and analysis while identifying enabling technologies for future fusion power plants. Dedicate safety to mitigate industrial hazards including cryogenics, high voltage, and strong magnets.

Required Qualifications

  • At least a Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering or another relevant field with an EM background (physics, mechanical engineering, etc.)
  • 7+ years of experience modeling electromagnetics using finite element method
  • A strong background and theoretical understanding of computational electromagnetic analysis
  • Experience modeling non-linear physics
  • Experience with commercial finite element tools. COMSOL preferred
  • The ability to customize commercial finite element tools or develop new in-house codes in modern programming languages such Python/MATLAB/C/C++
  • Able to quickly grasp experimental setups and analyze data to validate models
  • An ability to clearly express and critique ideas

Desired Qualifications

  • Multi-physics FEM modeling with electromagnetics, heat transfer, mechanics, fluids, structures, etc.
  • Experience working with superconducting non-linear physics
  • Developing equivalent thermal and electrical circuit models
  • Familiarity with agentic coding tools and best practices
