Job Summary
Senior Principal Data Scientist at the California Dept of Health Care Services, working remotely within the United States and aligned to PST hours. Lead strategic data science initiatives, translate high-level business objectives into actionable analytical solutions, architect and deliver advanced models, mentor junior data scientists, and drive a center of excellence for analytics. Collaborate with leadership, data engineering, and cross-functional teams to deploy models, integrate data pipelines, and elevate analytics maturity while focusing on behavioral health outcomes and policy-relevant insights.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Advanced degree (Ph.D. or Master’s) in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
- 8+ years of experience in data science, with at least 3 years in a senior or principal role leading complex, high-impact projects.
- Proven ability to translate ambiguous business needs into data science solutions in a stakeholder-facing role.
- Hands-on experience with advanced analytics, including machine learning, statistical modeling, and big data frameworks (Python, R, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Spark).
- Experience deploying models and integrating with modern data platforms in collaboration with data engineering teams.
- Programming in Python, R, SQL; familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and data engineering tools (Airflow, Databricks).
- Strong data visualization and storytelling skills (Tableau, Power BI).
- Excellent communication, strategic mindset, collaboration, and leadership/mentoring capabilities.
